Swatch Watch Book
JULY 5,2010
Swatch watches became a collecting
phenomenon in 1983. Two established Swiss watch companies merged to
create the inexpensive colorful plastic Swatch watches, an idea
promoted by Nicolas Hayek. He was hired to find a way to save the Swiss
watch industry, whose watches were unable to compete with inexpensive
Japanese timepieces. Twelve watches were introduced in 1983 and
hundreds more followed, some special limited editions, some
artist-designed, some made for special events. Swatch The Club is a
website with information about the annual limited edition Swatch
watches. These special watches were so popular in the early 1990s that
shoppers waited in line to buy them the first day they were sold. But
the fad faded and today most Swatch watches sold in stores are designed
for everyday wear. Hayek died last week at age 82. He was still
chairman of Swatch at the time of his death. YOU CAN BUY ONE OF MY
